NSC Skating School & Figure Skating

Welcome to the skating development programs at the Super Rink. Learning and developing solid skating fundamentals are important for anyone who wants to enjoy the ice. We’ve got lessons for skaters of all ages and abilities.

Learn to Skate

The Super Rink Skating School offers skating development programs year-round for all ages from beginners to advanced.

Tot 1

Ages 4 – 5
This class is for a newer skater or a skater with little skating experience.
Must be four years old by the start of the session.

The following skills will be mastered during this class

    • Proper way to fall
    • Proper way to get up (unassisted)
    • Balance on two feet
    • Marching
    • Dip in Place
    • Two foot glide

Once a skater passes Tot 1, register for Tot 2

    • Parents are not allowed on the ice during instruction or in the hockey boxes while classes are in session.
    • Skaters will be evaluated on the first day of class to ensure appropriate class placement
    • Skaters must wear helmets (bike or hockey). Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
    • Beginner skaters are encouraged to wear good figure or hockey figure skates (no double blades)
    • Skates may be rented at the NSC
    • Continuing students should consider purchasing their own skates for best results

Tot 2

Ages 4 – 5
Must have passed Tot 1 to register for this class
The following skills will be mastered during this class

    • Forward skating
    • Two foot glide
    • Single forward swizzle
    • Dip while moving
    • Backward skating

Once a skater passes Tot 2, register for Beginner 2

    • Skaters will be evaluated on the first day of class to ensure appropriate class placement
    • Skaters must wear helmets (bike or hockey). Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
    • Beginner skaters are encouraged to wear good figure or hockey figure skates (no double blades)

Beginner 1

Ages 6 and up

    • One foot glide, left foot
    • One foot glide, right foot
    • One backward swizzle
    • Rocking horse
    • Two foot hop
    • Prep for snowplow stop

Once a skater passes Beginner 2, register for Pre Alpha

    • Skaters will be evaluated on the first day of class to ensure appropriate class placement
    • Skaters are encouraged to wear helmets (bike or hockey). Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
    • Beginner skaters are encouraged to wear good figure or hockey figure skates (no double blades)
    • Skates may be rented at the NSC
    • Continuing students should consider purchasing their own skates for best results

Pre Alpha

Must have passed Beginner 2 to register for this class
The following skills will be mastered during this class

    • Two foot glide
    • Backward wiggles
    • One foot glide, right foot
    • One foot glide, left foot
    • Three forward swizzles
    • Three backward swizzles

Once a skater passes Pre Alpha, register for Alpha

    • Skaters are encouraged to wear helmets (bike or hockey). Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
    • Beginner skaters are encouraged to wear good figure or hockey figure skates (no double blades)
    • Skates may be rented at the NSC
    • Continuing students should consider purchasing their own skates for best results
    • Parents are not allowed on the ice during instruction or in the hockey boxes while classes are in session.

Alpha

Must have passed Pre Alpha to register for this class
The following skills will be mastered during this class

    • Forward stroking
    • Snowplow stop
    • Forward crossovers, clockwise
    • Forward crossovers, counter clockwise

Once a skater passes Alpha, register for Beta

    • Skaters are encouraged to wear helmets (bike or hockey). Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
    • Skates may be rented at the NSC
    • Continuing students should consider purchasing their own skates for best results
    • Parents are not allowed on the ice during instruction or in the hockey boxes while classes are in session.

Beta

Must have passed Alpha to register for this class
The following skills will be mastered during this class

    • Backward stroking
    • T stop, right foot
    • T stop, left foot
    • Backward crossovers, clockwise
    • Backward crossovers, counter clockwise

Additional class option

    • LTS Plus

Once a skater passes Beta, register for Gamma

    • Skaters are encouraged to wear helmets (bike or hockey). Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
    • Skates may be rented at the NSC
    • Continuing students should consider purchasing their own skates for best results
    • Parents are not allowed on the ice during instruction or in the hockey boxes while classes are in session.

Gamma

Must have passed Beta to register for this class
The following skills will be mastered during this class

    • Forward outside three turn, right foot
    • Forward outside three turn. left foot
    • Forward mohawk combination, clockwise
    • Forward mohawk combination, counter clockwise
    • Hockey Stop

Additional class option

    • LTS Plus

Once a skater passes Gamma, register for Delta

Once a skater passes Delta, register ISI Freestyle Class (on ice), optional off ice technique or private lessons.

    • Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
    • Skates may be rented at the NSC
    • Continuing students should consider purchasing their own skates for best results
    • Parents are not allowed on the ice during instruction or in the hockey boxes while classes are in session.

Delta

Must have passed Gamma to register for this class
The following skills will be mastered during this class

    • Forward inside three turn, right foot
    • Forward inside three turn, left foot
    • Forward outside consecutive edges
    • Forward inside consecutive edges
    • Shoot the duck or lunge
    • Bunny hop

Additional class option

    • LTS Plus

Once a skater passes Delta, register ISI Freestyle Class (on ice), optional off ice technique or private lessons.

    • Dress with mittens and warm attire (snowpants, sweatpants, etc.)  Loose layers are best.
    • Skates may be rented at the NSC
    • Continuing students should consider purchasing their own skates for best results
    • Parents are not allowed on the ice during instruction or in the hockey boxes while classes are in session.

Learn to Skate Plus

We will introduce many basic skating skills from various levels as well as introduce beginning jumps & spins.

The LTS+ program is for Learn to Skate students who are interested in adding additional training to their group class or private lessons to fast track through the learn to skate levels and introduce skills more specific to figure skating sooner than the traditional learn to skate program.

Must also be enrolled in traditional group classes or private lessons.

Figure Skating

The Super Rink Skating School offers several options for skaters who have progressed through our Learn to Skate program and want to learn more about the beautiful sport of figure skating.

Ice Contract

Please use the following contracts to secure ice time. They are in PDF format for convenient download and printing.

  • Offered to skaters who wish to purchase additional practice time to work on skills.
  • Can be purchased by skaters to schedule private lesson time from one of our qualified staff instructors.
  • Fee covers ice only.
  • Instructor fee is additional and is paid directly to the instructor.

  • During the contract registration window, please check the on-line registration system for session openings. Sessions are filled on a first come-first serve basis.

Refund Policy

No refunds on contract ice. However refunds due to serious injury will be given with a doctor’s note. Note must be received 72 hours from date of injury.

Ice Show

The Super Rink produces an annual skating show

Featuring skaters from the NSC Skating Programs.
This fun ice skating recital on ice is filled with costumes, fun music, bright lights and skaters of all ages from tots through adults that are part of our skating programs at NSC.

Competition

The National Sports Center Skating School is proud to present our annual Frosty Blades ISI figure skating competition.

Frosty Blades will be featured on Rinks 2 and 3 at The National Sports Center.

Open Skates and Events

Grab your friends and family and join us at the Super Rink for some ice skating!

The cost is $7.00 per skater. Skaters 10 or younger must have an adult chaperone remain in the building at all times. Skate rental is available at the front desk.

Payment/registration should be made at the front desk when checking in for the activity.

Senior Skate

Senior Open Skate is for 50+ skaters looking to socialize and get some exercise!

All Senior Skates are 9:30am-11:00am. Senior Skate is Tuesday and Thursdays except as noted in the Calendar.                        

Santa Skate

Santa Skate is an open skating event for skaters of all ages to skate with Santa!
