As a newly graduated high school student, it is often hard to leave an impact on your surrounding community, and even more so impacting others around the world.
18-year-old Avery Soli did just that by creating a soccer equipment drive for Target USA CUP. She was in the National Honors Society for her high school where each senior student had to complete a service project.
Avery knew that with her service project, she wanted to do something that personally connected to her, and that happened to involve soccer, USA CUP, and helping kids in need. She has played in this tournament for at least 6 years and has many favorite memories, but one that stuck out to her was subbing for a team out of Chicago because, “it was fun experiencing new playing styles and playing with different teammates.”
Since Target USA CUP has given her so much, this is how the “Greater Goal Soccer Equipment Drive” was born on the National Sports Center Campus. Throughout February 5 – March 1, 2023, donation bins were placed at the indoor sports hall and dome entrance for the community to drop off gently used soccer equipment for teams and players in need.
Avery’s drive supports kids in need and helps them play the game they love. As Jamaica will get the first selection from the drive, she wanted to make it easier for them to have access to soccer. As she mentioned, “everyone should be able to experience something that brings them joy like soccer has done for me.” She is most looking forward to watching the kids play who received the equipment and seeing the smiles on their faces on and off the field.
The distribution took place on Sunday July 16, 2023. From this cause, she is extremely thankful with how the community was willing to donate and support the equipment drive.
When asked if she had any final messages, she said “Don’t be intimidated to start something in your community. Don’t be afraid to volunteer or help out. It really does pay off!”
